Our Top Record of the Year: The Artist's Lux Claims the Number One Spot.

At first glance, Lux might appear closer to a challenging scholarly examination than the latest pop project from a musician whose previous hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Broken into four separate parts and sung in thirteen tongues, it is a breathtaking symphonic album exploring female mystique, spiritual transcendence, and bodily transformation, frequently by way of the prism of different women saints. The end of a romance—a topic handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—soars upwards on this record, carried by the constant presence of a full orchestra and input from an award-winning composer among a vast list of contributors. Its sheer audacity by itself renders the efforts of other artists seem quite small.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

The fact that Lux manages to escape overly academic chin-stroking is nothing short of miraculous, with sole praise belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not her first album to fuse the past and modern styles, its ambitions feel much higher here, with the tightrope walk far more dramatic. What really elevates this fourth release, beyond its multilayered melodies, dense compositions, and engrained drama, is a core spirit of playfulness. Similar to the iconic artist during her peak, there is a captivating sense to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you into its tornado. Even when she is breaking hearts in two, you still desire to stay alongside her for the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This playful energy comes forth brightly on the stunning piano-led song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four moments. Then, everything drops away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous giggle and a declaration prior to a comically over-the-top string surge crashes down with cartoonish force. The track immediately segues to the wild track featuring galloping strings, an imposing choral group, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The charm with Lux is that the listener rarely quite understand—nor wish to predict—where you will go to next."

Almost every song finishes in a totally distinct point than how it began. A track examines the fleeting trappings of fame over a featherlight orchestration only to collapsing into electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls her earlier rhythmic work starts out moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, before sudden traditional handclaps and an angelic choir arrive to smooth the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Of Art & Pop

A key achievement of the album is navigating the line of bold experimentation and broad appeal. This is little coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's first release to crack the Top 5 of major markets: its heart contains a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. One track performed entirely in the English language builds on a chorus that feels to collect more and more nagging hooks while it spirals upward. This trick gets repeated on another expansive ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture impact of contemporary breakup anthems, lambasting a former partner described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a painted-on edge, akin to a storybook figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a grand level, a hungry reach for capital-A Art in an era of impending artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of sublime elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that masterfully controls its inherent excess. This is a deep source of buried treasure that takes patience to fully mine but never feels like a chore. Where some major releases of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a sumptuous banquet at which the characters around the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flit between conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common gossip about useless partners. It is a contemporary musical from music's most restlessly creative practitioner.
